Episode 11 is heaven, featuring a host of inspiring young artists who have turned their passion into careers. Music video director Sammy Rawal and illustrator Juliana Neufeld are collaborators and BFFs who share the story of how they managed to get the coolest jobs ever. The creators of the beautifully designed and written Bad Day Magazine explain the process behind creating Toronto’s best homegrown arts and culture magazine. We were also lucky enough to chat with some of the directors and writers of plays featured in Summerworks. To cap off the evening, which was attended by a huge crowd for our first fundraiser, live shows were performed by two Toronto bands, The Darcys and Styrofoam Ones. If you couldn’t make the fundraiser but would still like to donate, please hit the pink button:

Amidst a flurry of projections, Heartbeat Hotel sang us some sweet music.

Dyeni Waboso and Weyni Mengesha, from The Africa Trilogy, a trio of plays premiering at this year’s Luminato Festival, talk to us about breaking down the misconceptions that Africans and Westerners have about each others’ cultures, and about how these misconceptions have shaped the modern world. Get tickets to the show, which runs from June 10-20, here.

Nader finds the value in the discarded, be that broken toys, scraps of metal, or roadkill. He takes his artistic direction from what he is confronted by, for example, he learned how to taxidermy animals after finding dead critters while scavenging, and was then faced with the decision of what to do with his beloved cat after it died of a cancerous tumour. Find out what Nader decided to do with his kitty in this episode.

Adam does people-watching better than the rest of us, cleverly snapping candid photographs that look artfully staged. His photos are touching, human portraits that cause the viewer to think about the story behind the person who a moment ago was just another face on the street. Adam also helped install Kate McGrann’s “I Miss You” chain link embroidery that is on view and well loved by everyone who goes to Trinity Bellwoods Park. View more of Adam’s work at Inconduit.

For their show at Whippersnapper on March 11, for which they cancelled their scheduled CMW gig, Ian Vanek and Matt Reilly played inside a cardboard fort, which lasted all of 45 seconds before it was crashed into and destroyed by the sweaty horde of thrashing fans.
This fourteen piece (at present) comedy troupe won the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Sketch Troupe in 2007, and is nominated each year. Each member is an active on the scene comedian, working in stand up, on the stage, and in television. They are opening their own theatre this spring, so keep checking the website to find out the location of the next season of weekly live stage show Sunday Night Live.
Finding a likeness of the Virgin Mary on your grilled cheese is fine and all, but it’s getting a little stale. Tibi Tibi Neuspiel is bringing something new to the table with his “Assassination Sandwiches,” which are portraits of famous people on beeswax toast, archival in concept and form, and widely regarded as the greatest thing since sliced bread. All terrible puns aside, Tibi’s artwork is genuinely funny, absurd, thought-provoking, and so masterfully crafted that it will cause you to second guess your sanity.
This Guelph-based multimedia collective is comprised of a six-piece orchestra playing haunting instrumental scores, and a guy with a Playstation controller who conducts the sequence of projected paintings, which, along with the lyrics, direct the narrative. The music and the art keep pace with each other and tell the story of a rapidly transforming world in which basic social structures begin to unravel as urban spaces morph over time. The PHC were commissioned by Wavelength to create a new piece that premiered April 3rd at the Images Festival.

Featured in Episode 8

“Little Iliad is a conversation between two people, two old friends – one a writer, one a soldier – who together attempt an unlikely re-telling of a lost Homeric tale. The play is about real war and mythical war – how both shape us, and how both can be survived.” This work-in-progress is produced as a collaboration by One Reed Theatre, where Frank Cox O’Connell and Evan Webber are co-director and writer/performer, respectively. They will be performing at the Harbourfront Centre’s Free Fall Festival from March 25-28.

A new decade is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than to check out Late Night in the Bedroom’s newest showcase of homegrown talent. Filmed in front of a live audience in the heart of Toronto’s Chinatown, the show features five creative gems you will not want to miss. This episode starts on the roof with musical guest Jonas Bonetta of Evening Hymns, who played a song from his newly released album Spirit Guides. Alistair Newton, founder and director of the Ecce Homo theater company, spoke to us about his controversial play The Pastor Phelps Project: A Fundamentalist Cabaret. Photographer Laurie Kang also joined us live, and gave a detailed and candid low down on her highly personal staged images. This episode also features two off-site segments profiling visual artist Amanda Nedham at her recent exhibition Tapping the Admiral at LE Gallery, as well as gallerist Megan Bradley of Montreal’s Galerie Push, who spoke to us at the Toronto International Art Fair. Finally, Evening Hymns ended off the night with a spellbinding live set. View photos from the live show.

In 2007 he released the album Farewell to Harmony under his own name and the Let’s All Get Happy Together EP under the Evening Hymns moniker. His newest album is Out of the Sparkand was released in November.

FROM THE PASTOR PHELPS PROJECT PROGRAM: “Warning! Bible preaching ahead! Pastor Fred Phelps and the good people of the Westboro Baptist Church are here to explain why God hates fags and America is doomed. It’s homophobia versus burlesque in a musical cabaret showdown.
Featured in Episode 5

We were lucky enough to have Boys Who Say No as our featured musical guest on our first episode and now it is our great pleasure to debut their first music video for “No I Won’t”. The video was beautifully shot by two of our own, Istoica.

Not just pretty faces, the indie-pop quartet Boys Who Say No – featuring the gifted Toronto natives Luke Correia-Damude (vocals/guitar/banjo), Frank Cox-O’Connell (drums/banjo), David Stein (bass), and Mike Lobel (synths/ukelele/percussion) – also provide their audience with a hefty dose of talent. Famous for their magnetic stage presence and contagious melodies, the men of Boys Who Say No are in increasingly high demand and are rapidly expanding their fan base. Currently, they are splitting their time between recording their LP and preparing for upcoming shows across Canada.

Late Night in the Bedroom is comin’ atcha straight from the grimy streets of Toronto for the city’s annual all night art extravaganza, Nuit Blanche. Careful to avoid the splatters of vomit garnishing the sidewalk, and the drunk teenagers from whose bellies more impending vomit was stewing, we got up close and personal with Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan of Finger in the Dyke Productions and spoke to them about their Bay Street spectacle “Wild Night”. Artist Katie Bethune-Leamen artfully orchestrated a group of costumed crooners in “Ghost Chorus: Dirge for Dead Slang”, an all-night performance that took over Larry Sefton Park. We also checked out curator Devon Ostrom at the AGO and spoke to him about the amazing Beautiful City Billboard Fee Campaign. Finally musical guest Alpha Bot wigs out in a good way.

Featured in Episode 4

Devon is a Toronto based curator and artist whose craft work and organizing skills are the driving force behind many of the projects that we are currently excited about in Toronto. Some of his efforts include the Manifesto Festival, H.Y.P.E at the AGO, which featured emerging graffiti artists, and the Beautiful City Billboard Fee (BCBF) campaign. “The Beautiful City Billboard Fee proposes that the companies investing in billboard advertising be held fully accountable to the public for their access to, and impact on, public space. This initiative requires that an annual permit fee be paid by the operators of third party outdoor advertising that is over one hundred square feet. Proceeds are to be used for commissioning public art to benefit and beautify local communities.” Visit Devon’s personal website to find out more and support the Beautiful City campaign online.

Featured in Episode 4

Toronto-based visual artist, curator and writer Katie Bethune-Leamen creates personal and fantastical tableaux using her own unique language of visual metaphors. Her works often evoke a sense of nostalgia and verge on the surreal and absurd. For Nuit Blanche 2009, Bethune-Leamen orchestrated a chorus of singers draped in luminescent fabric called Ghost Chorus: Dirge for Dead Slang, which brought back into parlance, at least for one night, forgotten slang words.
Featured in Episode 4

Winnipeg-based Finger in the Dyke Productions, a two person collective comprised of multi-disciplinary artists Shawna Dempsey and Lori Millan, are famous for their provocative, politically-conscious performances and their acerbic wit . Working in the mediums of video, performance, and installation, the duo tackle notions of gender, sexuality, and social politics, often creating characters through which to express their concerns. Internationally acclaimed, with works housed in the collections of many institutions across North America, Finger in the Dyke Productions’ comprehensive catalogue raisonné can be viewed online at www.fingerinthedyke.ca.

Featured in Episode 4

Jake Roels, aka Aphabot, conducts an orchestra of synths, keyboards, and string instruments into his crazy collection of loop pedals. The result is a surreal rhythmic wave of electronic melodies which are accompanied by his eclectic vocals. While he is sometimes backed by a band, he performed solo for Late Night in the Bedroom.

This very special edition of Late Night in the Bedroom was filmed off-site at the Manifesto Gallery at 52 McCaul Street. The interviews and musical performance took place in an installation put together by artists Joshua Barndt, Piotr Adas and Adrian DiLena. Piot Adas speaks about the installation as well as his own practice. Graffiti artist and illustrator Elicser, whose work is also displayed in the venue, is profiled, as well as Steve Ferrara and Lisa Martin, otherwise known as Well and Good, who were instrumental in the creation of the recently unveiled Paint Your Faith mural at the Metropolitan United Church on Church St. and Shuter St. Street artist Roadsworth, whose signature stencils adorned the asphalt surrounding the building, is also featured. Audience members were treated to a private, intimate set by Tim Moxam and his acoustic guitar.

Jabari “Elicser” Elliot is man of many talents. Around the city of Toronto, where he grew up, he is most famous as a graffiti artist. His cast of cartoon characters walk with us along the walls and through the alleyways, and people physically interact with his art when embracing the Hug Tree, which he painted, on Queen Street West. For Manifesto, Elicser created a wall piece, but he is also works as an illustrator and is an avid bike enthusiast, with a small two-wheeled army painted and cared for with the same attention as the distorted figures he has painted across the city.
Featured in Episode 3

This week’s episode was filmed in an installation titled Almost Inside Out, which Piotr worked on in collaboration with Adrian Dilena and Joshua Barndt. Born in Bydgoszcz, Poland, Piotr moved to Toronto to work as an artist in 2000. Inspirated by graffiti, stenciling, poster art, urban movements, and the classical European technique, Piotr’s work deals with issues in contemporary society. He has worked on murals throughout Toronto commissioned by the city, and has painted the portraits of many prominent hip-hop musicians. Most recently, Piotr has been working with a flower series in exploring the myriad ways that art can interact with the landscape.
Roadsworth

Featured in Episode 3

Montreal-based street artist Peter “Roadsworth” Gibson has been manipulating the omnipresent street markings and signage that direct city traffic since 2001. It all began as a protest against inequality: bicycles are not allotted nearly as much space as gas-guzzling automobiles, but morphed to become a more innocuous form of urban intervention, with the artist adding onto already existing markings to create an amusing image, such as a pedestrian crossing extended to look like a giant footprint. Using his signature stencil technique, Roadsworth has expanded upon his methods. For Manifesto, for example, he created a pattern of giant fall leaves surrounding the building. More about the artist can be found at www.roadsworth.com.

Featured in Episode 3

With his supermodel looks and dulcet tones, Toronto based musician Tim Moxam has been breaking hearts across the provinces both solo and with his band Hey Bear, Whoa Bear. After listening to his deeply personal lyrics, listeners are left wanting to know more about the soulful singer, but for now will have to satisfy their yearnings by listening to his album, and if they’re lucky, by catching him performing a live show. www.myspace.com/timmoxam

Since 2005, the abandoned or underused buildings and spaces of Toronto have been given new life in the form of late night events featuring experimental artists and performers. The organizers of these events, known as Extermination Music Nights, are friendly trespassers Matthew McDonough and Daniel Vila. The response among Toronto’s art community has been overwhelmingly positive, and each night draws large groups of people who travel to the outskirts of the city using directions given only on the day of the event. Make sure to keep your ears open for where the next one will be held – Extermination Music Nights only go on during the warm months, so the next one, rumoured to be happening on September 26th, may be your last chance until next year.

On August 26th, Late Night in the Bedroom, Toronto’s brand-spanking new arts and culture talk show premiered in front of a live audience with a wildly exciting lineup of guests. The show’s guests included the extremely prolific hip-hop photographer Che Kothari, who talked about his work as well as Toronto’s Manifesto Festival, which he helped found and currently directs. Guerilla gardeners Sean Martindale and Eric Cheung, otherwise known as the “Poster Pocket Plant Guys”, discussed their delightful street interventions. Finally, musical guest Boys Who Say No, graced Late Night in the Bedroom’s apartment studio with a set of their quirky and unpredictable indie pop rock. View photos from that night.

Che was raised in Guelph, Ontario and moved to Toronto when he was 17 to pursue a degree in photography at Ryerson University. His past work has included shooting portraits of Ziggy Marley, K-os, Ice Cube, Zaki Ibrahim and Faith Evans, and many others. But Che is not just a photographer. He uses many tools other than the camera to inspire and create meaningful change. Che has utilized his connections within the artistic community to help foster other young artists in Toronto by creating a grassroots organization called Manifesto. The culmination of his works is a four day city wide festival called Manifesto Festival of Music, Art and Culture. This festival features young artists, designers and musicians who perform, network and make lasting connections throughout the festival. Check the festival out at www.themanifesto.ca.
